HAIKU VACATION RENTALS

Haʻiku, which means "talk abruptly" or "sharp break" in the Hawaiian language, is located a short 15 minute drive or 13 miles east from the Kahului Airport. Along the winding Hana Highway, you will pass the historic town of Paia and, very shortly thereafter, the world famous Ho'okipa Beach Park. As you descend and climb out of Maliko gulch you are on the very outskirts of the windward countryside of Maui known as Haiku. The temperature in Haiku is usually in the low 80's and sunny during the days with brief passing tropical rain showers which usually blow off by the ever present trade winds. From select spots in Haiku, you can catch tremendous sunsets, breathtaking views of the West Maui Mountains and, on clear days, you can even see the outline of neighboring island of Molokai. During the evening, frequent rainshowers can be expected which provide Haiku's lush vegetation. The majority of the year, these showers have dissipated to cool crisp air by morning!

The town of Haiku formed around The Haiku Sugar Company which was founded in 1858 by the Kingdom of Hawaii. Castle & Cook partnership, contracted with Isaac Adams of Boston and D. M. Weston for a milling machine and boiling house with total cost of US$12,000. The first crop was processed in December 1861. In 1871, Samuel T. Alexander became a manager of the mill. He formed Alexander & Baldwin with his partner Henry Perrine Baldwin and organized an irrigation system from 1876 to 1878 that allowed more steady crops to be grown in more leeward areas of the island.
